2nd Trimester of Pregnancy: What To Expect & Look After

Pregnancy is the most beautiful AND most challenging phase in a woman’s life.

Beautiful because a new life unfolds over 9 months, and challenging because it demands the time, physical strength and emotional investment of a soon-to-become-mother.

Where the first 3 months of pregnancy are concerned with the baby’s development, the second and third trimesters concentrate more on growth. The second trimester is also considered the easiest to carry, because the first trimester troubles of morning sickness, constipation and acidity generally ease off.

The second trimester begins from week 13 and ends around the end of week 27 of pregnancy. This is the time when your baby starts growing in size which is evident by your steadily increasing belly. An exciting milestone in the second trimester is when the mother begins to experience the movements of her baby. In a first-time mother, this experience can come as a late as 20 weeks, whereas in a mother who has delivered a baby before, she may be sensitive enough to feel the baby kicking in the 14th week itself.

As pregnancy hormones continue to build up, new symptoms and disturbances crop up, like:

  1. Swollen and Sensitive Gums

A general increase in blood flow can lead to congestion in different parts of your body which means you can experience sensitive and swollen Gums, sometimes causing bleeding as well.

  1. Stuffy Nose

The increase in blood circulation can make the nose feel congested and leave you with a feeling as if you have a constant cold.

  1. Dizziness

Frequent and unpredictable dips in blood pressure can cause spells of dizziness. Eating a light but energy-rich meal every 2 hours can help to keep low blood pressure at bay.

  1. Aches and Pains

The womb and ligaments present around it begin to stretch to accommodate the rapidly growing baby. This stretch can translate into a mild ache in the lower abdomen. Again, because the mother’s spine needs to make adjustment for the baby, a lower back pain is the most common complaint a second trimester mother comes with.

  1. Skin Symptoms

You will also notice changes in skin which include pigmentation or darkening around the face, belly and thighs. In the final weeks of the second trimester, you may also start developing stretch marks. Applying almond oil or a Vitamin E-rich oil can minimize the development of stretch marks.

Although all these symptoms disappear post-delivery, their presence during pregnancy can cause discomfort and distress. The good news is that each of these symptoms can be safely, gently and effectively managed with homeopathic medicines.

As opposed to pain killers and muscle relaxants (which need to be avoided as much as possible during pregnancy), homeopathic treatment causes no side effects in the mother or harm to the baby.

It is advisable to also look out for certain alarming signs like a sudden and unexplained increase in thirst, extreme fatigue and excessive urination, which can be due to underlying Diabetes. Sudden weight gain, excessive swelling of feet, hands and face can be warning signs of a condition called Pre-eclampsia, which needs specialist care. If you notice any of these signs and symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
