Just because it is a natural process, it doesn’t mean it is easy. Problems in breastfeeding are quite common, but just know that you are not alone. So fret no more, we can fix this! We are here to guide you through solutions to some common problems of it.

Tackling Common Breastfeeding Problems

Nipple Pain

Ouch! Right? Well, in the initial stages of feeding, it is quite natural for your nipples to feel tender or sore. What you can do is, ensure that your baby is held in a comfortable position and that he/she is latched onto to your breast. You should also make sure to have skin-to-skin contact with your baby.

Issues With Milk Supply

While feeding, have you thought to yourself, “Do I have all the milk my baby needs?” Apparently, this question is best answered while keeping your baby’s age in mind. As your baby grows, your breasts will tend to feel less full, but it may not necessarily mean that there is less milk. Consult your doctor if in doubt, and put your mind at rest.

The Let-Down Reflex

Sometimes you have a ‘full’ feeling where your breasts are concerned. The let-down reflex is exactly that, with breast milk flowing out spontaneously. If you experience this, tackling it is simple. Gently hold up your breast between your middle and first fingers, and press down towards the nipple; this should reduce the flow of the milk.

Swollen Breasts

Usually, when the milk comes in, you can experience swelling in your breasts and maybe even your underarms; you may even experience a fever. What you need to do is, express your milk by gently pressing your breasts or use a breast pump.

Blocked Milk Duct

You may have sometimes noticed a small white speck on your nipples or even felt some pain in your breasts, with a lump or swelling. These are signs of a blocked duct. You need to feed your infant as often as you can, to keep blocking at bay! Also, check with your doctor if in doubt.

Nothing compares to mother’s milk, and breastfeeding is a beautiful journey. But breastfeeding has its ups and downs. But don’t give up. A little effort in overcoming these hurdles will ensure the most fulfilling journey with your most precious companion: your baby.
