It is one of the most common causes of infertility and other health problems in women such as irregular periods, heart diseases, obesity and skin issues.

Studies have shown that PCOS cannot be cured, but once the exact cause is identified, it is possible to control it. The primary PCOS causes are unhealthy lifestyle and diet.

PCOD/PCOS Causes

Though the PCOS causes are not clearly known, studies have shown that genes and abnormal hormone levels also are causes of PCOS. Being overweight further aggravates the health condition. Studies done worldwide have shown that 50% of the women with PCOD are overweight.

Mentioned below are a few health conditions that can be PCOS causes as well.

Increase in insulin levels

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Its job is to control the amount of sugar in the blood and convert it into energy. Insulin resistance means that your body is unable to convert sugar into energy effectively. This could also create increase the production of androgen and cause PCOS.

Obesity is a major cause of insulin resistance. Both obesity and insulin resistance can increase your risk for type 2 diabetes. Almost 70% women with PCOS have insulin resistance. This means their cells are unable to use the available insulin properly. When the cells fail to use the insulin properly, the body’s demand for insulin shoots up.

High levels of insulin cause the ovaries to produce excess androgen, causing difficulty with ovulation.

Hormonal imbalance

Hormones are substances that help the body systems to function properly. Any imbalance of the hormones can affect the body drastically. The reason: hormonal imbalance causes problems not only with fertility and ovulation but also with hair, skin, weight and more.

So, how can you return these hormonal levels back to normal? While many doctors will tell you to opt for surgeries to remove the ovaries, but this will not help in the long run.

Low-grade inflammation

Inflammation is part of your body’s immune system, which triggers a defense response to harmful stimuli. Women who suffer from PCOS usually have low-grade inflammation that stimulates their ovaries to produce excess male hormones. This chronic low-grade inflammation is also linked to insulin resistance and obesity. If a woman’s insulin levels are higher, the ovaries produce excess testosterone.

So, how to fight this inflammation? Start exercising, avoid gluten, refined sugar and anti-inflammatory foods as part of your PCOS diet. Increase intake of Omega-3 foods as they fight inflammation or take Omega-3 supplements.

Genetic issues

If any female member of your family, like your mother or sister, suffers from PCOS, then there are chances of you getting it too. Even though PCOS causes are not well known, you can still protect yourself by making a few simple and healthy lifestyle modifications and feeding your body with the right kind of food.
