We expect to have the symptoms during a minor bout of the flu, but at times an upset stomach can indicate a more serious problem.

Nausea and chest pain

Nausea and vomiting accompanied by chest pain could be indicative of a heart attack. The most common symptoms are:

  • Tight chest pain, crushing, and pressure
  • Left-arm pain
  • Chest pain that travels up the neck and around the back

Sudden, intense vomiting

If severe nausea and vomiting suddenly occur nearly 4-6 hours post-meal, food poisoning could be the reason. If mushrooms, poultry or fish were eaten, and these symptoms observed you should visit the doctor for medical help.

Severe vomiting in pregnancy

Most women suffer mild to moderate stomach upset during pregnancy with occasional vomiting. Hyperemesis gravidarum occurs when the vomiting is severe that puts the mother and baby at risk, and medical assistance should be sought when the symptoms include:

  • Loss of more than 5 percent of body weight
  • Inability to keep any food or liquids in the stomach
  • Dehydration

Nausea after head trauma

Nausea and vomiting that follows a blow to the head are a warning sign that a serious head injury or concussion may be present. Often nausea goes away, but if it worsens, it is often a sign of brain trauma and you need to visit the doctor immediately.

Unexplained, persistent nausea

Individuals who are suffering from nausea, which is not easily linked to any known cause, might be the symptom of cancer. Other changes that may occur include:

  • Unexplained weight reduction
  • Exhaustion

Cramping and Nausea

If nausea, vomiting, and cramping appear consistently after certain food intake, it indicates that you have an allergy. Common food items that cause allergy are nuts, wheat, milk, and eggs.

Severe abdominal pain

Intense abdominal pain and nausea that is so severe that an individual has to walk bent over are often a serious sign of appendicitis. It could be a medical emergency, because the appendix may burst and cause a serious infection of the abdomen.
