Viral & Fungal infections

Viral infections are caused by the invasion of various viruses into the host’s body.

These infections are systemic, that means they involve many different parts of the body system at the same time. The oppressive humidity and rains in monsoon make it easier for infections to be carried from one person to another and are especially harmful to those with a weak immunity system. 

Viral Fever

Viral fever is one of the most common medical signs and is characterized by an elevation of body temperature above the normal range of 36.5-37.7°C.

Symptoms

  • Fatigue and body ache
  • Running nose or nasal congestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Burning sensation in eyes and skin rashes

Eye infection

Eye infections caused by viruses are generally mild and usually resolve on their own. It includes conjunctivitis, often called pink eye, which affects the membrane that lines the inside of eyelids and eyelid margin.

Symptoms

  • Gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Irritation and Itching
  • Discharge from one or both eyes
  • Blood clots around the cornea

Precautions

  • Have a hygienic diet. Avoid junk food
  • Take plenty of liquids
  • Keep yourself clean and detect early signs of weakness
  • Avoid contact with infected person
  • Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with an effective disinfectant before bringing them in contact with your eyes or mouth
  • Carry a sanitizer and apply it before meals

Fungal infection

Fungal infections are caused by fungus, a type of microorganism. The folds of the skin like armpits and the space between toes often retain moisture, especially during the humid monsoons and become ideal grounds for the festering of such infections.

Symptoms

  • Peeling, cracking, and scaling of the skin
  • Redness, blisters, or softening and breaking down of the skin.
  • Itching, burning, or both

Precautions

  • Keep your body dry.
  • If caught in unexpected showers, dry yourself as soon as possible. Change wet undergarments and switch to cotton ones, as they allow body to breathe
  • Wear sandals, if possible, to air your feet
  • Allow damp hair to dry before you tie them again

 

Bathe twice a day and add a few drops of lemongrass, neem or mint extracts to your bath water.
