Yoga Asanas for Treating Kidney Stones

Kidney stones, or nephrolithiasis, are small hard deposits that form in the kidneys.

However, there are various yoga asanas that can help prevent and treat kidney stones by stretching the body and stimulating vital organs. Here are a few yoga asanas that can help manage kidney stones: 

1. Uttanpadasana

It helps to improve the function of the liver, pancreas, and kidneys and strengthen the abdomen.

  • Lie down on your back with arms resting on the side.
  • Exhale and lift both the legs until they are perpendicular to the floor.
  • Try to maintain the position and breathe deeply.
  • Exhale and return to the initial position.

2. Pawanmuktasana

This asana helps in relieving gastric problems and even kidney stones.

  • Lie down on your back.
  • Lift both the legs and bring your knees close to the chest.
  • Clasp your hands around the knees, and bring the knees closer to the body.
  • Simultaneously, lift your head and bring your nose closer to your knees.
  • Breathe deeply and hold the pose for about a minute.

3. Balasana

Balasana helps in the prevention of kidney stones, and also helps alleviate the pain and symptoms of stones.

  • Kneel down and sit with your hips on your ankles.
  • Inhale and raise your hands above you.
  • Exhale and bend forward till your head touches the floor and palms are stretched out on the floor.
  • Breathe and maintain the pose for a few seconds before returning to the initial position.

4. Bhujangasana

This yoga asana relieves the symptoms of kidney stones and enhances the functioning of kidneys.

  • Lie down on your stomach.
  • Place your palms beside your shoulders.
  • Now inhale and lift the upper part of your body till navel and look up.
  • Maintain this position for about 30 seconds before returning to the initial position.

5. Ustrasana

This yoga pose oxygenates and detoxifies the kidneys and prevents and relieves kidney stones.

  • Stand on your knees with your hands by your side.
  • Slowly bend your body backward.
  • Try to grasp the heels with your hands and hold the position.
  • Breathe gently for a few seconds and return to the initial position.
