A sleep disorder is one that prevents you from getting quality sleep at night and leaves you feeling low on energy and sleepy. There are days when we may all have trouble falling asleep or waking up—we may occasionally even have a disturbed sleep. However, having this problem regularly can indicate a disorder. But can you really distinguish the normal from the abnormal? Ask yourself these questions.

  • Do you feel sleepy often in the day?
  • Do people tell you every other day how tired you look?
  • Are you irritable all the time?
  • Do you feel like taking a nap all the time?
  • Do you fall asleep while driving or feel very tired?
  • Do you need caffeine to help you through the day?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you may have a sleep disorder.

Common Sleep Disorders and What You Can Do About Them

Here are a few common sleep disorders.

  • Restless legs syndrome: Have you ever gone to bed, thinking that you are so tired that you could just close your eyes and drift off? But when you lie down and start to relax, some sensations in your legs prevent you from falling asleep? This is exactly what restless legs syndrome is. Most common in older adults and women, it is said to be caused by lower levels of iron reaching the brain. What you need to do is to curb your stress; get off alcohol and smoking; refrain from over-exercising; and get tested for iron, vitamins, and magnesium deficiency.
  • Insomnia: Is very common and can be caused by stress, jet lag, medications, and other sleep disorders. Mood disorders such as anxiety and depression can also lead to sleeplessness at night. Improving sleep hygiene and learning to relax can help.
  • Sleep Apnea: A temporary pause in breathing while sleeping that can awaken you frequently. This may be potentially life-threatening, but you may not remember waking up at night. But if you feel exhausted or sleepy during the day, visit a doctor.
