Yoga For Cancer – A Doctor’s Perspective

Being an oncologist, I get asked very often about benefits of alternative therapies and Yoga for curing cancer.

[the_ad id=”6152″]I have been thinking for a while to start a blog and finally I have done it!

I got introduced to Yoga around 2 years ago when a friend strongly recommended 1 week Yoga introduction course at the Yoga Institute at Santacruz, Mumbai. Initially I was quite reluctant as it was a day long  course for all 7 days but eventually joined in. From day one I was so happy that I made the right decision. I got to understand the basics of Yoga much beyond the “Aasanas”. I have been practicing Yoga since then and it has helped me immensely to achieve a stronger mind and a healthier body.

When we finally got  a Yoga teacher in our hospital, I seriously started thinking about benefits of Yoga for my patients. In fact I did a bit of a research to see if there is any direct evidence to suggest that Yoga helps for cancer cure. When I typed Yoga And Cancer in Google Scholar, 38,500 results showed up!! I was totally taken aback. I had no idea that so much had been written about it. There are a number of studies which showed positive impact on quality of life, sleep, well being, physical fitness, depression rates ……. the list is endless.

Now all my patients go through a Rehabilitation program, of which Yoga is an integral part. We are currently observing these patients closely and collecting their data. Most of them have been feeling much better with Yoga and very enthusiastic about it. I am not sure if we can, but at some point I would like to initiate a clinical trial to evaluate these effects and publish them. I hope Yoga helps my patients to deal with the stress of cancer detection and treatment a bit better.
