Sitting for a long time can be very unhealthy for an individual in several ways.

Here are a few reasons as to why sitting for a long time is bad for you.

  1. Heart problems
Sitting for a long time can become a significant cause of heart diseases. This is because while sitting, our body is mostly at rest and hence they burn very less fat. This might cause fatty acids to start depositing in your arteries.
  2. Body pain
If you have been experiencing chronic pains in areas like your neck, hips, shoulders and back, prolonged sitting can be a significant contributing factor for this.
  3. Bad posture
Sitting for a long time can put a lot of pressure on your back. Hence this results in your posture getting affected. If you are in the habit of slouching for a long time in front of your PC or your laptop, this can also be a major contributor to your bad posture.
  4. Weight gain
Sitting for a long time simply means you get to do very little physical activity. This leads to weight gain and obesity.
  5. Anxiety
If you have a desk job, your lifestyle becomes sedentary by default. This can get into the way of your sleep cycle and can result in you developing anxiety.
  6. Risk of diabetes
People with a sedentary lifestyle are more prone to developing diabetes than people who have an active lifestyle. Sitting for a long time can further develop the chances of diabetes in people who are already inactive.
  7. Damage in the brain
This might come as a shock to most of us but recent researches have shown that sitting for a long time can not only affect you physically but neurologically as well. Following a sedentary lifestyle and sitting for a long time can result in the thinning of specific parts of your brain, which are responsible for the creation of new memories.
